Several groups of regular -er verbs have slight spelling changes when they are conjugated. You will find six major patterns of spelling changes :
1) Verbs like commencer (to start)
To keep the [s] sound, verbs with infinitives ending in -cer change -c to -ç (c cedilla) when -c- is before a -a- or -o- . In the present tense this only happens in the nous forms (ex : nous commençons/we start).

To keep the soft g sound [j], verbs with infinitives ending in -ger introduce the letter e (but a mute e) before an -a- or an -o-. In the present tense this only happens in the nous forms (e.g : nous mangeons/we eat).

5) Verbs like appeler (to call) or jeter (to throw away)
In the present tense, verbs with infinitive endig with -eler or -eter double the consonant (l or t) -> j’appelle, tu appelles, il appelle, ils appellent. This rule does not apply to nous and vous forms.
